Clinical Summary

Young man stabbed into his thigh.

Imaging Procedures and Findings

A pseudoaneurysm is formed in superficial femoral artery. No evidence of A-V fistula is seen.

Discussion

pseudoaneurysm is a contained rupture of an artery wall with a persistent connection (neck) to the artery, resulting in a pulsatile mass. Most are seen in the common femoral artery as a complication of arterial catheterization. Other etiologies are surgery or trauma. The increased number of percutaneous interventions, use of large-bore catheters, longer indwelling catheter time, and routine postprocedure anticoagulation have increased the incidence of pseudoaneurysm to as high as 6%.

Final Diagnosis

Pseudoaneurysm of superficial femoral artery
